From more temperate climes, we might feel they have a Nepalling existence in such rugged terrain, with a heavy workload in bone-chilling temperatures every day. Worse still, where the rest of us would struggle to breathe for lack of oxygen, they are considered as little more than beasts of burden.
Aware of the challenges this family faces, scientists believe that lack of oxygen has caused the various attitudes, personalities, and habits they have developed – some of which I’ll describe before I introduce them to you...
One family member is incredibly forgetful – needing to be constantly reminded of the most basic daily tasks.
Another sibling has very long hair, teased to stand out in Afro style. Though its weight affects his sense of balance, he feels that it confers on him an Adonis-like attraction to members of the opposite sex.
A third member of this family is self-centred, and on such excellent terms with himself that he’s called Ego Many.
Self-absorption is another sibling’s primary focus, but not to belittle anyone else. He is morbidly focused on illnesses, and how he suffers from whatever health concerns have hit the headlines. If you ask how he is, be prepared for a tale of woe, complete with explanations on the benefits and risks of what his pharmacist has provided.
Yet another family member cannot concentrate on anything. A glazed look, with dark rings around his eyes, comes from being so short of sleep. One sibling suggested that he lie along the edge of his bed, so he might quickly drop off – but that joke fell further and faster than its sleep-deprived target.
The one who offered this sleeping suggestion is unable to be quiet, for the whole world needs to know his opinions and stories. Anyone near him will face a ceaseless verbal barrage that urges them to seek or invent any excuse to move out of earshot as fast as possible. He is never embarrassed by these departures, because he will happily attach himself to anyone else who strays close enough to become his next victim.
One family member cannot be trusted, having adopted the freedom to deprive others of their possessions. Despite their efforts at security, he will find a way to claim his rights to what could never be his. Sadly, he cannot help himself.
It’s impossible to avoid one more family member, however hard we try, for he will be front and centre, handing out orders to anyone within reach. As a control freak who refuses to play second fiddle to anybody, his word is law, and woe betide anyone who dares to challenge him. Set to rule the whole world, his nickname is Megalo Many.
In such a cold climate, one of them is especially appreciated, for he keeps them warm. Damp or green kindling is no obstacle to his ability to get a fire going and get them gathering and staying together despite their differences. They call him Pyro Many.
Our penultimate sibling is Zody, who is quite star struck. He enjoys their environment, for its clear air allows him to gaze into space. The others appreciate how he detects different stellar movements, but they doubt his claims that they can influence life on planet earth from so far away.
Last on the list is the one with exceptional intellectual ability, originality, and wisdom; for he knows exactly what to say and when to say it.
You may have guessed this family’s identity, but if you haven’t, I’ll introduce them to you. They are the Yak family, and they are in turn:
Amnesi-Yak, Afrodizzy-Yak, Egomani-Yak, Hypochondri-Yak, Insomni-Yak,
Yackety-Yak, Kleptomani-Yak, Megalomany-Yak, Pyromany-Yak, Zodi-Yak.
And last of all… Braini-Yak – who is my desperate attempt to connect this fable with the topic.
