“Ellie! You ready to go?” I called. She looked up at me, wrapped her long, thick tongue around another juicy thistle, and chowed down.
I shook my head with hands on my hips, then marched down and put the halter around her huge face. The straps wrapped around her long snout, reached along the sides of her face, and tied around her neck just behind the ears. Once I had fastened the buckle, I hooked my finger on the metal ring and tugged a little.
She knew what I wanted. Picking up her long, overgrown hooves, the massive beast crossed the land bridge and trotted up the hill. All the while, I held onto the metal ring. So easily, she could have yanked the ring away from me and run away. So easily, she could have trodden me down.
Yet she held me up. She steadied me as we rushed up the steep, rugged hill— with me wearing mere sandals on the rough ground. All her little ones galloped together with us as we rushed higher and higher. The mighty mother cow seemed to know I was not as sure-footed as she on that hill. Though I claimed to lead her, it was more she who led me on and up. I admired her strength.
The little ones all came running with us as we rushed onward and upward to higher ground and better pastures. She saw the gate before her. We all galloped through the gates to the abundant hill beyond.
Having made it through the gates, I unbuckled the halter and let it fall off her. I patted her long neck. She immediately started munching the lush grass and thistles. All the little ones gathered around and spread out to forage. I closed the gates behind us and climbed higher up the hill. Further up and further in, I returned to my home.
In time, sickness took away her strength. Her strength waned. No longer could she make the treks up and down the hill.
Yet the One who made her is never weary. (Psalm 121:4 KJV) Though His strength is unmatched, yet He is gentle. We are but dust, but He longs to take us by the hand and lead us. He longs to lead us by the still waters and green pastures. (Psalm 23:2 KJV) He longs to lead us upward to glory land.
No matter what rugged terrain lies in the way, no matter how weak or unable we are, He can give us the strength to go on. As Ellie helped me up and steadied me, so He longs to hold us up in time of trouble. Even if we are clad in mere sandals in life’s thistle patch, our Saviour can lead us safely through.
Faith is all He requires. If we will but place our faith in Him, He will help us with the rest. Even the cry of the desperate father, “Help Thou my unbelief!” He heard and answered. (Mark 9:24 KJV) As it was by two fingers alone I held the halter ring, so it is not by all our might and our power that we journey, but by the strength of the Almighty who holds us. Only when we put our trust in Him and place our hand in His can we answer the call to go further up and further into glory to which He calls us.
