I remember that day as if it were yesterday.
Six hours. Did we really stand there listening to the Word of God for six hours? Or was it only six minutes? It went by so quickly. I stood there listening to Ezra the prophet reading the Law of Moses, and other prophets explaining it.
After decades of never hearing the Word of God I thought the Word of the Lord would never hit my ear again. And now it had. And more important, it had hit my heart.
There was such weeping.
Weeping from guilt.
Weeping from shame.
And weeping from joy, knowing we would never be the same again and Ezra told us to stop weeping for this is a day of rejoicing. He told us the joy of the Lord was our strength.
Yes, the joy of the Lord is my strength. I knew there were still going to be challenging times ahead of us, but that phrase remained with me to the end of my days. The joy of the Lord is my strength.
When God let me come to see you all I found this book lying on a table. I started reading through it and I realized it was the law of Moses, but oh so much more. It was the story of David, and the story of Solomon. And then I found the book of … Nehemiah!
I read my brother Nehemiah’s story, and I read my brother Hanani’s story. I did not find my name in the book, but it was still my story too, and it was if I heard Jehovah telling me, “Yes, your story is there too. And if my people carefully read my Word they will find their story is also in this book.”
(TELLS AUDIENCE) Your story is in this book.
I am so envious of you. The law of Moses, the poetry of David, the wisdom of Solomon, and most breathtaking of all the words of the Messiah. Not in a scroll only priests can read but in a book that fits in my hand. The word of Jehovah (SLOWLY AND EMPHATICALLY) in my hand.
I had to stand for SIX HOURS to hear the Word of the Lord. You can read it any time, anywhere and share it with anyone.
Remember this:
The joy of the Lord is your strength.
And the Word of the Lord is your treasure.
Author’s note: Based on Nehemiah 8. This monologue is fiction, there is no information as to whether Nehemiah did or did not have a sister.
