Rich. I had always thought of myself as being rich. After all I was rich in blessings.
Rich, married to a prophet, God's presence right in my house.
Rich, two beautiful sons
Rich indeed.
And then my husband died, and my riches disappeared. We had no money, and the creditors came. My two beautiful sons, all I had left, were going to be sold! NO!! (SHRIEKS IN ANGUISH)
Where could I go? I had to go to the source of all riches. But that was Jehovah, how could I reach Him. Oh, but I knew his servant Elisha.
I cried out to Elisha, , “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.””
2 Kings 4:1 NIV
Elisha asks me what do I have in my house. What do I have? Is Elisha trying to rub my poverty in my face? “
I tell him, “Your servant has nothing there at all, except a small jar of olive oil.” 2 Kings 4:2 NIV
He tells me to go to my neighbors and borrow every jar I can and then fill them with oil from my small jar.
I go door to door begging for jars, any jars.. My friend Miriam gave me her mother's heirloom jar. My neighbor Lilith gave me her favorite purple jar that she had cherished since a child. Neighbor after neighbor, friend after friend harkened to my pleas, giving me jar after jar.
And we went to work.
Filling jar after jar out of that one little jar of oil. Never-ending oil, never-ending hope, never-ending riches.
And then I told my son, bring me a jar, and he tells me there are no more jars. And the oil stopped flowing. But the hope and riches did not.
Elisha tells me to sell the oil and I have enough money to pay off my husband's debts, save my boys and have enough for us to live on.
And I realize we are not poor.
We are rich.
Rich with blessings.
The blessings of my two sons.
The blessing of neighbors giving out of love and sacrifice.
And the blessing of Jehovah. I didn't need my husband's presence to be blessed by Jehovah.
Jehovah is my blessing too. With Jehovah I need never be poor for Jehovah enriches my life.
