For many years, I served you faithfully. I did not ask what you did, or meddle in your business. Never once did I protest anything you asked of me.
Yet this was a special situation. You see, my Maker gave me eyes to see what you could not see. I saw peril lay before us. The bright one drew his sword against you, so I turned out of the way to protect you.
During our scuffle, the bright one with the sword disappeared, so I cautiously resumed the journey. As we traversed through a place between two walls, I saw again the bright one standing with drawn sword. I turned away and scraped against the wall. I did not mean to hurt your foot, but I feared for your life if I were to continue straight down the path as you commanded.
Angrily, you struck me again. In your defense, you were not in your right mind that day. Ever since those strangers came, you were trapped in a dark brooding. I knew you were not well, but what could I do? I did the best I knew how to save your life that day.
The bright one vanished once more. I trotted clip-ity-clop down the stone road again. As we pushed through a very narrow place where the walls were close together. The bright one appeared again. I was sure he meant you harm, but here, there was no room to turn aside out of his reach. Not knowing what to do, I sank to the ground beneath you.
Now as I said before, you were not the same man I had known before. Before, you had always cared about me and provided the best for me. Since those men came with promises of greatness, your eyes were darkened. So frustrated by my third offence, you beat me again. I cried out to my Maker. He gave me a voice to speak your language, and speak I did!
“What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?” I cried.
Still scowling under darkness, you spat out poisonous words. “Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.”
Still, I thought to reason with you. “Am not I thine [donkey], upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? Was I ever wont to do so unto thee?”
Now, you began to awake from your furious slumber. You saw that what I said was true and answered, “Nay.”
Just then, my Maker opened your eyes to see what I saw. You fell down flat on your face. You had made a fool of yourself before our Maker and you knew it. The bright one spoke to you.
“Wherefore hast thou smitten thine [donkey] these three times? Behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me: And the donkey saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.”
You confessed your stupidity and offered to return home. The bright one knew, however, that you were far too absorbed in your dark brooding to be rescued even now. So he let you go on, warning you to be careful to only speak as our Maker bid you.
My Maker pled my cause that day. I saved your life, though you beat me for it. I did the best I could for you, and received your hate in return. Yet, in all of this, I did my best to please my True Master who made us both. I know He smiles down on me when I do what is right. No matter what you do, I will always remember the day my Maker let me speak to you in your own language.
