Of course I want peace!

“Of course I want peace! What makes you think otherwise? I follow Yeshua just like you do. I heard Him preach yesterday. You were there, so you know: He said, ‘I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.’ We have to defeat the Romans first. Obviously that is what He meant. Yes, I know He did not actually say that about the Romans, but I am sure that was what He meant. He would have been arrested if He had said it plainly. Be reasonable. After we have driven all the Romans out, we will have peace. And the more we kill while doing that the better – it will reduce the chance of them trying to come back.

“Just think how wonderful it will be when He comes riding into Jerusalem on a mighty war horse, with all of His loyal followers carrying swords. Oh, by the way – I have found a swordsmith who is making swords just as fast as he can. I haven’t met him yet but he is a friend of a friend of mine with a secret hidden place in the mountains. His swords will cost a bit but they will be very good. So no worries. All will be well and we will be victorious.

“Do you know where we can get some horses? I mean proper, trained war horses? Oh stop raving on about how expensive they are. We will simply steal them. Surely God will help us in that- we are doing it for Him, after all.

“And when it is all over I am going to grab one of those houses over there on the hill. It will be wonderful! I am so grateful to Yeshua for making it all possible. And I will trade all my donkeys for horses. Donkeys are so inferior.”

Two years pass

“What are you doing? Get away from my donkeys! That colt is vicious and cannot be trusted. No-one has ever ridden it. And if you try to get close it’s mother will attack you. Don’t blame me if you get hurt!”

“What did you say? The master has need of them? That is crazy. Tell Him I hope to get a horse in the next few months for Him. He just has to be patient a little longer.

“Are you serious? He REALLY wants donkeys? Go on then – take them – if you are game. Don’t say I did not warn you.”

A couple of hours later:

“I do not believe what I am seeing! Yeshua is coming – RIDING THE COLT WHICH IS BEHAVING PERFECTLY! Why is He humiliating Himself? I thought He knew the history of His people. When a king came to a city outside his own country, if he came to conquer he would ride a horse. If He came on a donkey it meant he came peacefully. THIS IS WRONG!!! And what are His followers doing? Not ONE of them is carrying a sword. NOT ONE.

“Why wouldn’t He listen to me? Why is He insisting on doing things His way when it should have been obvious that I knew better? If only He had heeded me we would be well on our way to victory now. This is a dreadful disappointment. Was I wrong about Him being the Messiah?”

One week later:

“Well, He obviously was not the Messiah. No Messiah would allow Himself to be crucified! At least we can see clearly now, the need to find another Messiah.

“Hey – maybe I could be the Messiah. I am obviously better suited to the job than He was. Yes – it feels so right. I am sure I am meant to be the Messiah. I will have no trouble getting disciples now that all of His are so disillusioned. They will come to me when I make it clear we will destroy the Romans.”

Three days later:

“God forgive me. I was totally wrong. Totally. Please have mercy on me.”

Two thousand years later:

The Rev Benjamin Crammer says:
“We want the eagle. The Holy Spirit descends as a dove.
We want to take up swords. Jesus takes up the cross.
We want the roaring lion. Jesus came as a slaughtered lamb.
We keep trying to arm God. God keeps trying to disarm us.”

Today:
Do not harden your hearts against the Prince of Peace. He is coming soon to be your King.
