Historically, this lovely “uppity-downity” furniture has been a favorite of older folks who find comfort in sitting to rest, chat, reminisce, or pray. It seems as if all ages would benefit from doing this simple action that can calm jagged nerves and maybe even make humans stop being so mad at each other…about everything…twenty-four hours a day.
President Kennedy was very proud of his rocking chair. I was amazed to read that he had twelve! From Camp David to Air Force One, he was never too far from his favorite piece of sitting furniture. He insisted it helped to relieve the lower back pain from injuries he sustained in WWII, and also was a good antidote to stress.
Perhaps all leaders of slippery-slope countries should be required to rock and think about something larger than power or war. Eternity comes to mind. Who knows what incredible things might transpire from millions of people pondering important life and death issues? Why, it’s positively revolutionary!
A few years ago there was some kind of psychological study done that suggested the best relaxation in the world can be found in two things: Watching the slow activity in a fish tank while quietly enjoying the comforts of a favorite rocking chair. I would add a gentle rain on a tin roof and the lonesome whistle of a train in the night, but then that’s a writer’s brain kicking in to evoke a stronger image.
I’m not sure if those clinical volunteers were offered any subjects to contemplate. All they did was sit and rock. Reportedly, the test cases showed everything from decreases in high blood pressure to increases in calm demeanors.
The point I’m hoping to make is this: If we all took time to do what seems like a useless, silly, chair experiment, perhaps there would be greater insight into what life truly means and why we are here. And believe me, there is a reason!
When noise from every source imaginable is nearly a constant companion to us day and night, does that suggest there could be someone somewhere who does not want us to hear what’s important to our eternity? Evil loves cacophony and distraction.
Christians already should have figured out who that someone is that fights to keep a universal, unchangeable TRUTH from us. It’s all so simple. When we are born, we never die. Period. Never means NEVER! It’s the only “Never Land” that matters.
While taking a minute to decompress and listen, please consider that our only reason to be on earth is to teach and witness and proclaim glory to the God who made us and to accept His son, Jesus, as payment for our sins so that we can pave the way for as many as possible to return to our REAL home in Heaven.
To be blatantly redundant, we have a beginning, but we do not have an ending--ever. Our bodies eventually die, but our spirits live on.
When given the choice of two eternal resting places, why would a person choose one filled with more hate and punishment than Earth has ever seen? Doesn’t make sense.
If I were to decide to run for an imaginary office, my platform would be a rocker one. My first executive decision would be a request for the world to please sit down and try to grasp the concept of what forever and ever, amen really means, and then join the ones who know there is a precious place waiting for us.
And finally, NEMO RESIDEO is a military motto. Translated from Latin it means, “No one left behind.”
Those sometimes-confused ancient Romans may not have had the proper chairs for serious pondering about life and death, but once in a while they made good sense. In modern slang, on occasion, some of their mottos rocked!
