Do you know someone who has lost her dignity? Do you know someone who has lost her identity? Maybe you see her in the mirror?
And then I think of three women in the Bible who had lost their dignity but then found a new identity in Christ.
I first think of Mary Magdalene. Tormented by seven demons, she had no dignity. Until…I wonder what it would have been like to be Mary.
PUTS ON HEADDRESS
Alone. Alone. Alone. How I crave to be alone. The townspeople point at me, and laugh. Why not, my hair balloons around my head in a tangled mess. My clothes are torn and filthy from rolling around in the dirt. My arms bleed from scratches where I have tried to relieve my torment. But I never can. I so crave to be alone but I never am. Those demons are always with me. “Leave me alone!” I scream at them. But they hiss, “We like it here. We’re never leaving you.” I had lost my dignity; I had lost my identity.
But then came Jesus. He touched my hands, and the demons were gone.
I had felt like a zero,
but along came my hero.
He restored my dignity
He restored my identity
as a child of God.
REMOVES HEADDRESS.
He restored her dignity. He restored her identity as a child of God. And then I think of the woman at the well. I wonder what it would have been like to be her.

Dignity. What’s that? That’s for those noses-in- the-air women in town. (PUTS NOSE UP IN THE AIR MIMICKING THEM) How can I have any dignity when the whole town whispers behind my back. “Did you hear how many husbands she’s’ had, and I hear that the one she is living with now isn’t even her husband.” And then the shocked gasps of the other women. The only way to have any shred of dignity was to go draw water at the well in the heat of the day. Who in their right mind goes to the well in the hottest part of the day. The answer is “No one.”
And that’s just the way I liked it.
No one to point at me
No one to turn their backs on me.
No one to steal my dignity.
But then Jesus came.
He didn’t judge me. He didn’t make me feel worthless. He offered me living water.
I had felt like a zero,
but along came my hero.
He restored my dignity
He restored my identity
as a child of God.
REMOVES HEADDRESS
He restored her dignity. He restored her identity as a child of God. And then I think of a third woman. I wonder what it would have been like to be the woman with the issue of blood.
PUTS ON HEADDRESS
Twelve years of hearing “unclean! Unclean.” Twelve years of having no dignity, just the identity of that “unclean woman.” I went to doctor after doctor until my money and my hope was gone. I sneaked through the crowd, not worrying about being dignified. What would even be like to try to be dignified. But then Jesus..
I touched the hem of his garment, and then, and then. I was healed. I had my dignity back. I had my identity back.
I had felt like a zero,
but along came my hero.
He restored my dignity
He restored my identity
as a child of God.
REMOVES HEADDRESS
He restored her dignity. He restored her identity as a child of God. None of us need to live without our dignity, without our identity. If we reach out to Jesus, this too can be our song:
I had felt like a zero,
but along came my hero.
He restored my dignity
He restored my identity
as a child of God.
