it all began with a bath. An innocent bath. A woman has to bath, doesn't she?. And the roof of my house was private, our house was taller than almost every other building so none could spy on me. Except, except, except...
My bath would be in clear view of the palace. In clear view of the handsome King David, who was staying home from the war. Ah, King David, the subject of my girlish dreams and fantasies.
When I married Uriah, a wonderful man, such a man of integrity, I put those girlish dreams away. But did I? Or did I only tuck them away..for later?
For when Uriah went off to war, I learned that King David had stayed behind. As to what happened next, take your pick as to the theory. A helpless woman ensnared by a king, or a seductress? Or somewhere in between?
I could hardly deny the summons of the king! But would I have even if I could?
As you know, the violation of my marital vows, of my integrity, led to a pregnancy. David tried to fix things, to have Uriah come to me, so that it would seem that the baby was his. But Uriah, man of integrity, slept on our doorstep. A final act of integrity that sealed his fate. David arranged for Uriah to die in battle. And then he married me.
What had we done? How did we go down this path? (ADDRESSES AUDIENCE) Maybe you know what I'm talking about. How a single step down the wrong path has led you to abandon your integrity.
David repented. And our child died. I wept for our child. I wept for my lost integrity.
But God restored us.
I took my second chance with son Solomon, raising him to be a man of integrity.
And God used me to write a chapter in the Bible. My son wrote it, but it was my words. I believe you know it as Proverbs 31. The model of a woman with integrity.
It's not too late to restore your integrity. With God's help and forgiveness, you can write your new chapter today.
