There are many ways to bury things
Besides a hole in the ground.
Sometimes it’s done from pure neglect
Or putting it where it can’t be found.
Or maybe we set it aside
Intending to pick it up again,
Then succumb to the distractions
That intrude on our horizon.
It might be more intentional
As when we dig the deep dirt pit,
And place our treasure farther down
And stomp all over it.
I suppose I’ve done all those things
With my uncertain writing scribbles.
Life always overruled my plans
With which I never quibbled.
Sometimes I wrote my personal thoughts
In a journal or a diary.
They were full of youthful angst
And “Who am I?” inquiry.
Later marriage and the joy of children
Caused writing to be set aside,
Put in a box on a closet shelf,
Writing time firmly denied.
Employment was another hurdle
I had to overcome.
Newsletters became my default choice
As I wrote to inform everyone.
My life overtook my energy,
Though I filled my file folders
With writing I cranked out quickly.
I will write better, when I’m older.
The years went by without notice
As my files and docs got deleted.
I even tried writing for a blog
And ended up defeated.
When I was young, I used to say
My writing decade is still to come,
To write all that was in my heart
And then present it to the One
Who gave whatever gift I have,
To use to give Him glory,
To speak the truth in painful times,
And offer my own story.
For I went out and dug and dug
To unbury what I’d hidden,
To resurrect the hope and zeal
And write what was unwritten.
My simple, quiet efforts
To finally use what God gave me
Have caused my life to flourish.
May it count for eternity.
