Upon the violin.
She practiced hours every day
On that and mandolin.
Rebecca Reece was somewhat skilled
At strumming a guitar.
She had success, but never sought
To truly be a star.
John Johnson had a little gift
For playing the piano.
When called on for a tune, he’d say,
“I will not, but I can, though.”
A music festival was held
Within their tiny town,
And everybody came to see
Which one would wear the crown.
And when came time to give awards
For their abilities,
Can you tell which would win the most,
The honors, then to seize?
The music master had some words
For what had been presented.
To girls, he gave the highest praise.
John’s solo, he lamented.
And now we know. It’s plain to see:
The one who did the best
Had added to the gift she had
And thus outshone the rest.
