This day
That you open my eyes
To the times I prize
Fame and praise
Help me to follow
Your humble steps
Help me never to wallow
In foolish regrets
And jealous thoughts
Lord, I pray
That the words I say
And the thought I think
Never sink
To a disgraceful depth
May I exalt others
Above myself
May I place my ego
Upon the shelf
Of humility
But I can’t hide
My desires inside
You see it all
And You call
Me to a higher place
You know, I long to hear the applause
For the crowd’s chatter to pause
So they can applaud me
So they can exalt me
Oh wicked pride
I wish I could hide
My desires to be praised
My desires to be raised
Above others
My sisters and brothers
Lord, I pray
This day
That You give me a humble heart
And that I may no longer start
Down the path of pride
You see it all
And You call
To my heart
Saying today’s a fresh start
For that humble life
