A bulb is a silent promise.
Outwardly, it shows no worth.
Yet when it gently opens,
Triumphantly, life pushes forth.
From that first sign of living force
Comes growth and sprouting green,
Until the flower shows its bud
Followed by beauty unforeseen.
It’s like our own outer shell
Concealing what’s inside,
Presenting to all those we know,
Hoping ugly truth to hide.
So our solution oft becomes
Sprucing up what’s our outside,
Instead of tending our inner heart
To shine through what skin can hide.
We learn to emphasize
The face we show the world,
The important position we might gain,
The seats of honor we might hold.
While our outside is but a façade,
Our inside is the seat of sin.
The cost of sin is only death
Which Christ has paid for us to win.
God has led us to another way,
To seek our worth in knowing Him.
He alone opens up the bulb
To all we can become.
No honor for our earthly self,
But honor that reflects on Him,
We rejoice and sing our praise,
At last, now true life can begin.
