A lone sheep having gone astray;
Each road I took, each bridge I crossed
All led me down the broader way.
I never felt to stop or check,
Take stock of where my journey led,
Continued on my vagrant trek
As, come what may, I pressed ahead.
I fed my soul with every food
And drank at troughs of every kind,
Though maybe toxic, tasted good—
Held hostage by my blinded mind.
I never knew the Shepherd sought
Out wanderers who’d gone astray,
I’d never given it a thought
Until I really lost my way.
I reached the point of dread despair,
Felt cornered in a cul de sac,
Could find no exit anywhere,
No light in sight, no turning back.
Within my heart I heard a voice,
A little echo faint and dim,
A sound I’d long shut out by choice—
How glad I was, now hearing Him.
I called, He answered straight away,
He rescued me, a hopeless case
No more to wander or to stray—
Praise God for His amazing grace.
