Then one day he burst into the house announcing, “Deborah, I am now a disciple of the rabbi, Jesus.” He stood as if waiting for my reaction. I laughed, thinking he’s joking. His crestfallen face showed me my error.
I apologized and hugged him. At that moment, I thought he would soon tire of it and go to the next new thing. But he didn’t. Jesus changed him.
I still remember hanging on every word as Petertold me about how he walked on water.
CHANGES HER VOICE TO SOUND DEEPER “There we were in our fishing boat, battered and bashed by the waves. Then a man comes walking toward us. The others start panicking and cry that it was a ghost! But it didn’t look like a ghost to me, it looked like… Jesus???
A familiar voice calls out to us “It is I. Do not be afraid.” I had never wanted to follow Jesus more in my life. I call out to him, “If it really is you Lord, command me to come to You on the water.” For I knew whatever he would command me to do, he would empower me to do.
And he said my favorite word, my favorite command, “Come!” The others call after me and tell me not to be stupid but there was only one voice I was listening to.
I jump out of the boat, and next thing you know I’m walking on the water. Look at me, I’m walking on the water. But then I saw how big the waves were and I started falling and I called out, “Lord, save me!”
Next thing I know Jesus reaches down and saves me. And I realize I can walk on water—as long as I keep my eyes on Jesus.
GOES BACK TO NIRMAL VOICE
Walking on water is a frightening thing. Walking on water is a glorious thing. I had Peter tell me the story again and again. I wish I could have seen it – I wish I could have done it!
Peter and his friends went out to shine the light of Jesus, walking on the water of faith. I stayed at home, missing my husband wishing I could join him in his journeys, hiding my light under my bushel.
The time came for Peter to once again leave on a journey. I held up my cheek for a goodbye kiss, trying to hide my tears of longing. “Look at me my darling Deborah,” Peter said. I looked up and Peter stood there with a mischievous smile and held out his hand to me and said, "Want to come? Want to come walk on water with me? Just be sure to keep your eyes on Jesus."
ADDRESSES AUDIENCE
I ask you all the same question. “Want to come? Want to come walk on water? Just be sure to keep your eyes on Jesus."
