The book was “You Were Born for This” by Bruce Wilkinson. The first chapter starts like this: “What if I told you I’m certain you missed a miracle yesterday? And not just any miracle but one that Heaven wanted to do through you to significantly change someone’s life for the better—maybe your own?”
The author has many, many radical new ways to tell others about Jesus but the one that made me think, “I can do this”, encouraged me to be brave. Let’s face it. I stumble, fumble, and stutter when I think about talking Jesus to others. Sounds intelligent, doesn’t it?
Well, the ‘process’ that I chose was to take a hundred-dollar bill, pray over it, and declare that it was God’s money. It’s a sacrifice for another. So, I put the bill in my wallet, making sure I had it where it wouldn’t be spent.
I waited. I waited for God to give me the ‘nudge’ of the Holy Spirit to show me who to give it to. The bill resided in my wallet for three months. I kept waiting. Each time I saw a person, it didn’t settle in my spirit. Sometimes I forgot the money was there. Maybe I missed it but I still waited for God to show me who He wanted to touch.
I had to go to Sam’s Club on Saturday. I never go on a weekend because of the crowding but for some reason, I chose to go on that day. I picked a spot far away from other cars near the cart corral so I didn’t get boxed in.
My list was long. The near-overflowing cart and I made it back to my parked car. I opened the hatch and started to unload the groceries when I saw a tall young man walking fast towards me. He wore a vest lettered with the store’s name, so I wasn’t alarmed.
He said, “I’ll take the cart for you.”
“Ok, but let me unload it first.”
“No, I’ll unload it and you just wait.” He proceeded to pack the rear of my car.
I thought I should give him a tip and headed to my purse in the front seat. As I went, I heard in my head, ‘You’re going to give him a lousy tip?’ Funny how the Holy Spirit talks to us as if He were talking the way we talk!
‘Oh, ok! I’ll give him Your money Lord!’ It felt right. I quickly folded the hundred-dollar bill and went back to see if he was finished.
As he reached to take the cart, I handed him the ‘tip’ and said, “God told me to give you this. It’s not my money but His and He wants you to have it.”
He just looked at the money and then back to me.
“No, I can’t.”
“Yes, you can. It’s His money. God sees you.”
“But, you have no idea.” His response was quiet and pained.
“I know I don’t, but God does.”
“You have no idea.” His eyes were moist and embarrassed. “I live in a motel room with roaches.”
“I’m sorry. But God sees you and wants you to have this.”
“But in here, I haven’t broken,” he said as he touched his breastbone.
“Just look to God.”
In a flash, this lanky young man enveloped me with the biggest longest hug I’d ever had ... twice! He reminded me of the prodigal son returning to his father so grateful.
As I turned to go, his thanks were profuse. “Anything you need when you come here, just find me and I’ll get it for you. Thank you more than you know.”
“I don’t need to know but God does.”
My Father in Heaven let me participate with Him to give a miracle to someone that will change their life. I didn’t have to park where I did. I didn’t have to go on that Saturday. God had a plan that worked out with my plan. I’ll remember this event for He filled me with excitement, love, and hope for those He chooses to bless.
I didn’t know. God knew. His name was Anthony.
I now carry two one-hundred dollar bills in my wallet.
