Though I knew I was no beauty, I wondered what I could do to make him take notice of me. Looking at my dirty dress and muddy bare feet, I had a bright idea. I would put on my Sunday dress and my new shoes. I ran up to my room and got dressed up. Then unplaiting my pigtails and letting my hair hang free, I sneaked out and headed for Joyce’s house to make a good impression.
We played in her backyard all afternoon, but sadly, her cousin did not pay any attention to me at all, special or otherwise. So, I plodded slowly home in my new shoes, all scuffed up now.
This time, there would be no sneaking into the house. My mother and father were waiting at the door for me. Mama said, “Jean, where have you been all afternoon, and why do you have your Sunday dress and new shoes on?” I confessed that I’d dressed up so Joyce’s cousin would think I was pretty.
Mama said, “Obviously, you did not take a bath before you changed clothes. Don’t you know that to put clean clothes on a dirty body just makes the clothes dirty? Just look at how bad your best dress looks, and your new shoes don’t look new anymore.”
Dad was more sympathetic to my disappointment and told me that when the time was right, some special boy would think I was pretty. Then he added, “But your mama’s right. You don’t put clean clothes on a dirty body. Let this be a lesson to you.” . . . And it was.
