I didn’t know what to do. My precious daughter had a demon. None of you know what that means. At least I hope you don’t know what that means— what it really means to have the light of your life darkened by a demon.
Or perhaps you do know. Perhaps your daughter or son has been stolen away by drugs, alcohol, rebellion, or even an actual demon. Let me tell you my story, a story of persistence, hope and faith.
I remember that day as if it were yesterday. I was wailing aloud again about my precious girl.
My daughter was gone. The laughing, loving bundle of light has been stolen away and replaced with a snarling animal. A demon glares at me through what were once the eyes of my beautiful girl.
Come back to me, Berenice, come back, I plead. Come back to me.
And then I heard amazing news. That Jewish miracle worker, Jesus had come to our city. Some said he was the Jewish Messiah. But would a Jewish messiah heal a Gentile little girl? I didn’t want to even think about the answer to that. I had no time.
I ran to the house where I heard he was staying, almost stumbling and falling in my haste. What if he leaves before I get there? And then I see him! That has to be Jesus!
His back is to me.
“Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me. My daughter is demon possessed and she is suffering so much.”
He ignores me. So, I say louder, “Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me.” He still ignores me. I will NOT be ignored. My daughter will NOT be ignored. I repeat (VOICE VERY LOUD) Jesus, son of David have mercy on me!”
His disciples tell Jesus, “Look, she keeps making such a fuss. Can’t you just heal her daughter and send her on her way?” My hope rises at this, and I hold my breath and my words. Jesus tells them, “I was sent to the lost sheep of Israel.”
I will not be denied, my daughter will not be denied.
I ran around to the front of Jesus and fell at his feet. All I could do was sob out three desperate words, “Lord, help me.” He looked at me with such beautiful kind eyes but then says, “It is not right to give the children’s bread to the dogs.”
Ah, it was not the first time I had been called a dog by a Jew. That is how they see us. And Jesus is the Jew’s Messiah. And yet… could he be testing me?
“Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”
Jesus smiled, helped me to my feet and told me, “Woman, you have great faith. The demon has left your daughter.”
A torrent of almost incoherent thank yous pour from my mouth as I leave Jesus. I didn’t ask Jesus,”Are you sure?” I knew that I knew that I knew my precious baby girl had been delivered. Oh, how I hated to leave Jesus, but I had a miracle to see. I go to my house and my beautiful, precious daughter is in bed, the demon gone.
Don’t give up pleading to Jesus for your precious children. Have faith, be persistent, and believe.
The monologue is based on Matthew 15:21-28 and Mark 15:21-28
