They hoped that the rumor was wrong.
They'd heard that the Israelites' god would soon slay
Every son who was first-born and strong.
"We're frightened and terrified," the Egyptians cried.
"We're in danger and feel so alone."
Egyptians looked back on that terrible day
As the worst day that they'd ever known.
Some parents were begging while others would plead
For their sons to be spared from this fate.
But Israel's God had grown tired of it all;
Egypt's first-borns would die on this date.
Over 400 years had gone by since the day
That Egypt had captured, enslaved
The people of Israel, God's chosen tribes
Who time after time God had saved.
God directed His chosen to select from their flocks
One lamb that they knew would be slain.
While collecting the blood of the one-year-old lamb,
They prayed this was not done in vain.
They smeared the lamb's blood on the lintel and posts.
While keeping their families inside.
They ate roasted lamb as instructed to do
And unleavened bread was supplied.
So, all through the night, the death angel roamed
No son who was first-born was spared.
God got the attention of Pharaoh that night;
Egypt's first-borns had not been prepared.
When the wailing outside seemed to escalate more,
One mother peeked through her front door.
A stranger approached her, a sword in his hand.
She felt she had seen him before.
"I've come for your first-born, your son who lives here.
Go bring him to me straight away."
The woman stood bravely and faced the cruel man.
"I ask you to leave, don't delay.
"Israel's sons are protected by the blood of the lamb.
Look there on the posts and above.
'When I see the blood, I will pass over you.'
That's God's definition of love."
