Inspecting the future garden plot
Revealed the need for amending soil.
The hard earth could not produce
The fruits worthy of our toil.
Our truck carried the organic load
We transferred to our yard,
Then raked and tilled and worked it in
Until soil turned rich, no longer hard.
We carefully planted pumpkin seeds
In nice neat rows for future vines.
Then came water and warm sunlight,
Followed by waiting for sprouting signs
Two years ago, our crop exploded,
Pumpkins large and round and many.
But last year’s crop was, at best, skimpy
There were so few—hardly any.
The soil was bereft lacking food,
We neglected to amend it well.
The new plants feebly sprouted
And the bright orange blossoms fell.
I too must enrich my inner soil,
The foundation for the seeds of growth,
And amend my impoverished soul
To allow my fruit to blossom forth.
I used to think I’d learned enough,
Past years of Bible study gave me grace.
And goodness knows I prayed so much
Like when I needed a parking place.
I figured amendments I didn’t add
Were not important to my soul.
I acted like I’d done enough,
And would finish life’s race in a stroll.
I slowly came to understand
Just as earth needs regular feeding,
So my heart and soul did too.
Then I could obey where God was leading.
If my good intentions are for real,
It’s time to daily do all I can
To be the doer not the hearer
And accomplish what God has planned.
