SUSAN: Why can’t I be more like Jennifer. She sings beautifully, sews gorgeous outfits, and knows her Bible inside and out. She’s just like the woman in Proverbs 31. I think I’m the woman in Proverbs 32. You say there is no Proverbs 32. (DRAMATIC PAUSE) Exactly. There’s no room in the Bible for messes like me. I am a hopeless mess! am not good at anything! I have nothing to offer God. When the gifts of the spirit were handed out, must have been at the refreshment table.
(PAUSES)
At least that’s what I used to say. Until the night I fell asleep…and I dreamed I went to heaven. Let me show you that dream.
SUSAN LOOKS AROUND THE ROOM.
SUSAN: Where am I? Could it be…heaven? I guess it’s a good thing heaven is a free gift because I sure didn’t earn it by doing anything special on earth.
WOMAN 1 RUNS UP TO SUSAN.
WOMAN 1: (EXCITED) Susan, is that you? Jesus told me you would be coming today and I was so excited to meet you!
SUSAN: (PUZZLED) I’m sorry, have we met?
WOMAN 1: No, but your kindness reached me years ago. I was a little girl on a small island named Palau, and I never heard about Jesus or had never owned anything special. But then I got a box from Operation Christmas Child, I opened it, and there was a doll, just like I had always wanted and other wonderful things, a washcloth, soap, a toothbrush! And other blessings as well.
And I heard how people loving Jesus sent these boxes. And I wanted to know more about this Jesus whose love compelled such generosity. I always hoped to meet the person who gave me that box, and Jesus just told me it was you. Thank you for letting Jesus use you to encourage me and help bring me to Him. WAVES GOODBYE TO SUSAN AND WALKS OFF.
WOMAN 2 RUNS UP TO SUSAN.
WOMAN 2: (EXCITED) Mrs. Johnson! You’re here! I asked Jesus if I could come and greet you!
SUSAN: Marion Capillo! You certainly don’t have to call me Mrs. Johnson any more. But why did you come over here to talk to me. There must be a ton of people waiting to meet you and to thank you for bringing them to the Lord. I loved watching your crusades. You’ve come so far since you were a little girl in my kindergarten Sunday School class! I am so proud of how far God has brought you.
WOMAN 2: You’ll always be Mrs. Johnson to me. Don’t you see. I was a lonely little girl with divorced parents, bullied at school. You always had a hug for me, and you taught me all about Jesus, who loved me so much. If it wasn’t for you, I never would have had a ministry. Thank you. HUGS SUSAN AND EXITS.
WOMAN 3 RUNS UP TO SUSAN.
WOMAN 3: Susan! You must be Susan! Jesus told me you were coming! You saved my life!
SUSAN: I saved your life? But how? I don’t even know you.
WOMAN 3: My mother got pregnant. She didn’t know what to do, so she decided to have an abortion. She went to a center where there was a sonogram machine. And she looked at the sonogram and she saw…me. She saw I wasn’t a blob of tissue, I was a baby. And she kept me! You paid for that sonogram. Thank you. My mother thanks you. WOMAN 3 WALKS AWAY
SUSAN: The rest of my dream was a blur, meeting person after person who hugged me and told me how God had used me in their lives: a woman who came back to the Lord because I went over and sat by her at church and talked to her; a man who lived because of the blood transfusion from my blood donation, and countless others.
I woke up and realized.
I am not a hopeless mess with nothing to offer God. He has used me, He is using me now and He will continue to use me.
I don’t need to be more like Jennifer, or Kate, or Cynthia, or the others I’ve been envying. I just need to be more like Jesus. He can turn my mess into His miracles.
