What is truth? A question uttered by my husband so long ago and immortalized in your scriptures. I am Pilate's wife.
This itinerant rabbi had fascinated me for months. I even disguised myself so I could mingle with the crowd. (SHUDDERS.) That was quite the experience. But worth it. I had never heard anyone speak with such authority. Not even my husband...especially my husband.
The words he spoke, the miracles he did. Was he more than just a man?
I had spies everywhere, I wanted to know more about this man. I heard that he said to his followers, "I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me." John 14:6 ESV
Those words haunted me. The way, the TRUTH, the life. Truth. There was no absolute truth. The truth was whatever Caesar said it was. What was true today might not be true tomorrow. Relying on a truth was like leaning on a rickety staff. You might find yourself on the ground, impaled.
And yet I could not get his words out of my head. "I am the way, the truth and the life." The way to what? And what kind of life? And he claims to be the truth? In a place where truth is an elusive as a shifting shadow?
And then I heard that Jesus had been arrested, betrayed by his own disciple. That night, I was haunted and terrorized by horrible dreams about Jesus.
When I woke up, I heard that Jesus would be appearing before my husband. I held my breath as I sent an urgent message to my husband telling him “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.” Matthew 27:19 ESV
If only I could have gone there in person so that I could have stroked his back and whispered in his ear, “Have nothing to do with this man. Come home with me. I have a much better use of your time and energy than dealing with this Jew.”
Or perhaps I should have shaken him like one of our children. “Listen to me for once! Have nothing to do with this man.” But of course I could do neither of those things. I wasn’t even allowed in his presence while he was sitting in judgment. So I did the best I could and sent my message.
I had my spies in court. They were my eyes and ears and told me the entire exchange between Jesus and my husband. The messenger told me, “The Jewish prisoner said, ‘For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.’” John 18:37 ESV.
As the messenger said those words my senses tingled. No wonder I had had such foreboding. This was no ordinary man. My husband would be a fool to sentence him. But then, as far as Pilate being a fool, suffice it to say a wife’s lips are sealed.
“What is truth?” my husband asked, no doubt not wanting to hear an answer. He never wanted to hear an answer that didn’t fit his truth. And then he had the crowd choose between Jesus and Barabbas. And ultimately, he crucified Jesus.
“What is truth?” My husband had asked.
Simple. You killed the truth. Or so I thought. Truth was dead. There was no way. There was no truth. There was no life.
Jesus, the way, the truth and the life was dead. We had killed him.
Or so I thought.
But I was wrong.
Truth. The truth was not dead, and neither was Jesus. He is alive. And so are my hopes of finding the way, the truth and the life. What is Truth?
Jesus.
