The model raised a water bottle to her lips and drank. Slender-ringed fingers brushed blond hair behind her ear as she hesitated enough to ensure every eye fixed on her like a bulls-eye. She set the bottle down with authority. “When I first sat where you sat, I didn’t know who I was, why I was even here, and what difference I could make for our planet. I knew those before me had messed up and I knew that old thinking wasn’t going to solve the new problems facing our generation. I’m sure you’ve all come to realize that by now.”
An administrator nodded approvingly and moved a step closer. His closely shaved skull and generous goatee perched on a finely tuned sculpture of muscle drew appreciative glances from enough of the students. “And what difference did having an education here make for you and the questions you had?”
The rehearsed rhetoric continued as the model pointed toward the blue banner. “I’ve learned to build my truth.” A welcoming smile reconnected with the gullible newbies. “Now, it’s your turn to build your own truth. I was oppressed, repressed, and obsessed in so many ways and now I’m free. I’ve explored my inner core and discovered my identity, my true passions, and other travelers who share my freedoms.”
The administrator stepped forward. “Are there any questions?”
A hand raised in front of Wayland. Upon being acknowledged the brunette stood to her feet. “What do we do with the truth we already know? What if we don’t need to build our truth because we’re happy with what we have?”
The blond nodded but stayed silent. The administrator frowned. “Religious rhetoric and antiquated thinking have no place in institutions of higher learning. If you’re expecting Sunday School you’ve come to the wrong place. You’re here to discover things you might never discover elsewhere.”
The model raised her arms dramatically. “Imagine yourself dancing naked in front of everyone here and feeling perfectly fine. That’s the difference between how you are today and how you’ll be when your time here is done. You and everyone else will know exactly who you are because you will know your truth.”
The brunette stood her ground. “I believe that I already know true truth and I already know my own identity. I have nothing to prove to anyone.” She moved to the aisle and Waylund slipped onto the steps behind her.
“Wow, that was bold,” he said as they emerged into the sunlight.
She paused, frowning. Her conservative cut blouse and full skirt fit the poise and confidence he’d already seen. “Are you the only one in that whole room who thinks so?”
Stepping back, he held up his cell and smiled. “Name’s Waylund. Hoping that your true truth is the truth I’m hanging onto.”
“Harmony. Finish this for me. I am the way…”
He lowered his arms. “The truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
“Same truth. How are you going to make it through this maze of chaos?”
“By linking up with people like you. How else can any one of us make it? We’ll be the undercover operatives spying on the dark side so we can rescue the perishing.”
Harmony smiled. “And I thought I was dramatic. I know two who might join our movement.”
Waylund opened his cell and scrolled through his contacts. “If we’re starting a movement we’ll have to recruit a few others. I know a couple older guys here who might be game.”
“If they’re older, why haven’t they already started the movement?”
“Listen General, they’re new to all this. They came here to fill up and found themselves empty. There’s going to be others like them here ready for a conversation if we don’t get all high and mighty on them.”
The door opened behind them and a red-headed girl in sweats drifted down the stairs. “Do you have room for anyone else? I’m not ready to dance naked in front of anyone no matter how long they try to make me build my truth.”
Waylund extended his hands. “Welcome to the Truth Team.”
