Even before the newborn baby
Is in the world, there is love.
From the beginning of inner pushes and kicks,
The new mother has been captivated.
At her first sight of her cherub,
Her eyes fill up, as does her heart.
When her infant is placed within her arms,
She feels a missing piece of the puzzle,
That is her life, has been put into place.
Cradling her precious new love close,
She gently touches with her fingertips,
Velvety cheeks and tender crown.
She counts for surety, tiny fingers and toes,
Stroking silky softness of wee feet,
Then carefully searches the beloved face
For family resemblance.
She shares an intimate look of awe
With her husband, in recognition
Of the miracle God has created
From their love, and acknowledgment
Of this new responsibility they share,
To raise their child with His help.
She has only an inkling of the work ahead
On behalf of the bundle cuddled in her arms.
She is confident that never will it be possible
To have more love for this little one
Than already she possesses.
Still, she has not yet come to realize
That the infinitesimal seed of love,
Growing In her happy heart,
Will produce a flower
Of never-ending growth.

I love this! Not only do I appreciate your skill with free-versing, but I appreciate the sentiments you expressed so beautifully, I especially liked your description of a mother counting the fingers and toes of her newborn. I remember doing that with both of my sons. Just before I was wheeled into the delivery room for the birth of my first-born, the nurse whispered to me, "When you come back to this room, show extra kindness to the woman in the bed next to yours. She just gave birth to a baby with no hands and we haven't told her yet. She will need a lot of love and understanding." You can be sure the first thing I checked was my baby's hands. You spoke for a lot of us mothers who recall the extraordinary love God gives us for our newborns.
