And you, sweet little one, about to cross the great divide. We await you with breathless wonder at the one who knit you together for this very moment. We sense your questions, your wondering, your fears.
There are billions of us here who never felt the warmth of a mother’s breast, never snuggled into our own cribs, never felt the chuckle of a father at our first smile. Oh, we’re very much alive, very much loved, very much known by our Maker. And we’re finally safe.
Over a million of us are added every year from one country alone. Relating to others who remember the joys of sunsets and sunrises, of rainbows and eclipses, of flowers and dancing, is beyond our capacity but we still know joy. We see the mothers glance our way and if they could shed a tear I’m sure they would. We are their dreams and hopes from memories long past.
Those who embrace us have tried to explain why we never got to go to school, kick a ball or celebrate walking down an aisle. Those all are concepts of the world in-between. Words like “reproductive rights” or “bodily autonomy” or “legislation” mean nothing. All we needed to know is if someone cared enough to keep us safe.
In our discussions, it is clear that most of us took our safety for granted. We were warm, nourished, filled with life. We only knew one world and we didn’t expect more. Some of us almost made it to the world in-between. Our hearts beat faster in tune with another heart as the sounds of another world invaded ours. Little did we expect what that world thought of us.
But here we are.
One of the glorious ones told us how much pain we avoided through our escape from the world in-between. The True One had lived as one of us then entered the world in-between to absorb its pain and to secure our place in the True World After All. We only know what we know here.
A wise one said he had escaped the former world to live in the world-in-between for a full moment of life. He had filled his lungs with the breath of that terrestrial sphere and then joined us here. “It is a cold, frightening and uncaring place except for one thing.”
“What is that one thing?” I dared to ask.
“A mother,” he answered. “The one who carried me in the former world placed her lips on my face and I knew that she was the voice who sang sweet lullabies to me. She was the one who caressed me from the fringes of her world. She was the one who held me to her breast.”
If doubt existed in our world, it would be around this very thing. Do the mothers of the former world really care enough to sing, to caress and to nourish us in peace and safety?” We hear the stories from the aged ones who lived strong and free in the world-in-between and they too seem divided. While we know that our own incompleteness made it impossible for all mothers to usher us out of the former world, we have heard that not all mothers wanted us to breathe in the air of that place.
Being cuddled by our Creator is a joy without words. Dancing in eternal light and embracing the richness of true life is a happiness beyond celebration. None of us know what we missed from the world in-between but we know that we are safe and secure where we belong.
How do I describe a world you’ve never experienced yet? I don’t have any more words than I would have to describe the former world before the world in-between. We live where we are and we know what we know. One day it will all be different. We know that now, on this side of forever.
So, as you await your transition to here or the world in-between, know that we will be awaiting your arrival at its scheduled time. You are loved, little one. You will be safe in time.
