For it is the basis of my construction
of my dreams
Even when it seems
they are delayed
My eyes remain stayed
on the goal
There is a hole
In my heart
for my parents
who played such a huge part
In my life
And I will not forsake my mother’s teaching
To keep on growing
Keep on reaching
for my dreams
My mother painted with her brush
beautiful scenes so rich and lush
Like her I paint
But with my words
How absurd
to say I’m not an artist like her
I didn’t inherit her artist’s hand
But I did inherit
her artist’s heart
To use her art
I keep her memory alive
As I continue to strive
And follow her words
To fly like the birds
Ever closer to my dreams
Dad was strong
And let me sing my song
Without fear of scorn
Or having my dream torn
from my grasp
“We believe in you
To yourself you must be true
Use your gift
Let your words lift
Others closer to God”
I knew they were always there
Cheering me on
Showing they care.
The greatest legacy
My parents gave me
Was faith in Jesus
Who always frees us
To learn from the ultimate source
Having God to guide the course
Of our lives
I will not forsake God the Father’s instruction
For it is the true basis
For my construction
of my dreams
And I will not forsake the Spirit’s teaching
For it gives me the strength
to keep on reaching
for my dreams.
“Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.”
