I see a good friend as being non-judgmental. He or she has a good grip on love as defined by the Apostle Paul in I Corinthians 13. Do you have anyone like that in your life? With our mobile society it is hard to maintain lifelong friends, but what a blessing when we do!
Later, I sat down with my Bible and searched to see what I could find on friendship. David and Jonathan immediately came to mind. Ruth and Naomi certainly had a special relationship. But, what really stopped me in my tracks was a declaration found in both Isaiah and James that “Abraham was called God’s friend.” (James 2:23 NIV) It wasn’t a surprise that God was a good friend, but to exhibit the characteristics of a good friend toward God Almighty is something to be contemplated! To be counted as God’s friend would be such a privilege!
How can I be a friend to God? Am I always available when He needs me? Am I a good listener, or do I tend to do all the talking? Do I look forward to spending time with Him? Do I really care about what He cares about most? Do I love Him even when things are not going well? I can start by making it a priority to study His Word and not only talk to Him, but also listen.
“Father, thank you for loving me consistently and constantly. Thank you for always being available and ready to listen to my cry. In the good times and the bad, You are always faithful. Please help me to be a friend You desire. Thank You, amen.”
NIV Isaiah 41:8, James 2:23
