They were in the Central Highlands
Atop a tree-covered Viet Nam hill
It was a hundred and four degrees
The air was humid and deathly still
A squad of marines was on patrol
They were taking a much-needed break
Little did they know that they
Had made a very fatal mistake
Whistles began blowing all around them
Then the mortars began to fly
From the tree line, the VC appeared
Their intent? The Marines would die
The lieutenant called for air support
And was told they had to wait
To do their best to hold on
And pray that help wouldn’t be too late
One by one, the men went down
As the perimeter began to fall
Rallying for their last desperate stand
The lieutenant made an urgent call
“We don’t have much time”
“They’ll be on top of us soon”
“There are only five of us left”
“Of what once was my platoon”
“Help is coming! It’s almost there!”
Was then heard on the field radio
“Puff, the Magic Dragon is coming”
“Is there a hole where you can go?
“No,” he answered while looking around.
“We’ll do the best that we can”
“Send Puff in. We’ll be ready”
“Killing the VC is the only plan”
“Over the treetops, Puff roared in
With its Gatling guns a blazing
What happened next was a sacrifice
As a marine did something amazing
Over his buddies, he became a shield
As those bullets began to fly
And in a few moments, it was over
He perished so that others wouldn’t die
He had been in-country three days
And was new to the platoon
A quiet boy of eighteen years
Having his life ended so soon
What he did, he didn’t think twice
In his mind was Proverbs 17:17
He was a born-again Christian
And Jesus he soon would see
What he did was a simple act
Of God’s love in the first degree
He gave his life for his brothers
Doing what was meant to be
