It starts out as a tiny fire
A misunderstanding
A frustrated desire
Let God put out the fire.

Tempers clash
Tempers roar
What are we all arguing for?
Let God put out the fire.

We argue about the silliest things
Hotter and hotter each word brings
A bigger fire.
Let God put out the fire.

You hurt my feelings
So I'll hurt yours
Angry word after angry word pours
Out of my lips
Let God put out the fire.

The gasoline of words
Keeps the fire burning
Instead of thinking of ourselves
we need to be turning
to the Lord
Let God put out the fire.

I don’t know what to say
Words fail me
I need to pray
For God to put out the fire

I let God fill my mouth
with words of kindness
Words of healing
Words that can stop
our emotional reeling
from our pain.

And God put out the fire.
