“Shields up.” I looked up from my book to the screen which held my husband captive. My die-hard Trekker fan (or Trekkie, although apparently, that was not the preferred term) never missed an episode of any Star Trek episode – from the original Captain Kirk to the current Star Trek Picard, if there was a Trek in the name, he would watch it. He’d resigned himself to the fact that I had absolutely no interest in the antics of the Federation. Still, I usually sat alongside him, reading while the latest adventures of the current crew gripped him.

“Shields at 80%, Captain,” a voice intoned.
“Route power from the deflector beam.”
As the music intensified and the dialogue sped up, I put my book aside and leaned in a tad. I had to admit that the action on the screen was compelling. I watched in silence as the scene unfolded before us. Several ships were attacking the Enterprise (I knew that much, at least) from all sides, and the Enterprise was fighting back, but all focus was on the shields. If those shields went down, the Enterprise would quickly become a speck of space dust.

Finally, as happened in almost every episode, the Enterprise prevailed; the Captain (Picard, I think, but it might have been Archer or Kirk…) gave a soulful and thoughtful soliloquy, and the ship would limp off or shoot off into space, depending on the amount of damage inflicted.

“I hadn’t realized how often the phrase ‘shields up’ is used in each episode,” I commented once the credits rolled through. “I know you joke about the phrase, ‘Make it so,’ and ‘Engage,’ but honestly, I think ‘shields up’ is used as much, or perhaps even more than those.”
“Maybe,” Andrew replied, “I hadn’t really thought about it much.”
“Well, without that shield, the episodes would be much shorter,” I joked. “And think about how many times every power source is routed to the shields. Just tonight, it was the deflector beam, but I know I’ve heard commands to route all non-essential power to the shield.”
“Yeah. That’s true,” Andrew agreed.

Later that night, I pulled out my Bible as we settled into bed. Last thing at night and first thing in the morning, I read a chapter or two. “Hey, listen to this.” I nudged Andrew. “‘Every promise from the faithful God is pure and proves to be true. He is a wraparound shield of protection for all his lovers who run to hide in him.’ That’s Proverbs! A wraparound shield, like the Enterprise! That’s so cool.”
“Hmph,” was the sleepy reply.

I put my Bible aside, turned off the light, and snuggled beside my husband. “Say, I have been meaning to ask you; I haven’t seen the Millennium Falcon show up in any of the Star Trek shows. What’s up with that?”
“That’s Star WARS, not Trek, darling,” Andrew muttered. “Please tell me you are messing with me.”
“Absolutely,” I chuckled. I’d never tell him I really had no idea. I had to shield my Trekker husband from some things, after all.
