Feet That Prance

I can’t actually dance, but I can prance. And that’s because my Lord makes my feet like hinds’ feet.

Reading the proverb for today (30:5) immediately stirs up memories, reminding me of when I discovered King David’s psalm with almost identical celebratory words: Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

But the Psalmist didn’t stop there. When he continued I found myself dancing—oops, prancing—with the joy of discovering the passage that was the inspiration for Hannah Hurnard’s classic, Hinds’ Feet on High Places.

A melody sprang up that just fit the words—creating a prancing song that still fills me with joy. (I later came upon the Jewish folk tune Hevenu Shalom and realized that was the tune that had risen from my subconscious.)

He makes my feet like hind’s feet
And sets me up on my high places
As for God, His way is perfect
The way of the Lord is proved

He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him
For who is God but the Lord!
And who is a rock except our God,
The God who girds me with His strength

Li, li, li, li, li, li, li, li, li, li,
Li, li, li, li, li, li,li, li
He promised me; His word is true!
He said He’d make me perfect too!

He makes my feet like hinds’ feet
And sets me upon my high places!

The book Hinds’ Feet on High Places helped me during a time in my life when I needed to learn how to take refuge in God. Learn to recognize Him as the Word who is my shield against my enemies—enemies I recognized as my besetting sins. This was my take-away on my first reading.

But on subsequent readings it was the joy of walking in the High Places with the Lord that made me sing. He was proving to me that His Word was true—He was changing me! He was giving me a new identity, a new name.

In this allegory, Sorrow and Suffering are transformed into Peace and Joy. Much-Afraid is transformed into Grace and Glory. They are given these new names. This is the reality of being seated with Christ in the heavenlies today. There is this place of refuge described in another Psalm: The LORD God is a sun and shield: The LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly.

With my hinds’ feet I’m practicing walking uprightly. Lifting one foot and then the other. Following the steps of the One who called me to follow Him. It’s still awkward prancing, but His Word is true and one day I will be able to dance with Him—full of grace and glory.

I must try to locate the book mentioned in the two entries too.
I enjoyed your words very much.
I’m pretty happy to prance about with the joy of the Lord.
I think to dance with the Lord is wonderful and as yet beyond my imagining - what eye has seen, or ear heard territory, but I can imagine prancing joyfully with a fellow believer.
