Music played by visiting crickets with occasional hoots from a tree was in harmony with the creak of the chain holding us up. If we rocked a bit here and there, it was after the chore and before we closed our doors for the night.
Sometimes she would hum in that pure natural way, and I learned when to chime in along with one aunt as we added the part without the melody, yet it was necessary to strike a right chord to offer to the Lord in dear hymns.
Of course, there were boxes with pictures or knobs full of world-wide connections we could click with a switch and be bombed with bad bugs that jittered or hear all about sad or ugly, which did nothing to quieten our souls.
A plan was passed down back when our own human kin left us the way to unwind, re-group, and remember our reason for being. Even rain on the roof and the train in the distance gave us hope in the night as we slept and dreamed with no trouble--but trusted for sure.
Sadly, others we knew wanted loud things bombarding that rattled their nerves and sent them to bottles of liquid or pills. Ads on TV offered ways to be happy and neutralize any feelings of guilt or cover the pain with things so insane the cure was worse than the challenge or crisis.
It has never been simple for some.
Now, many more seem to be falling apart at the seams or right down the middle in droves. Everyone’s mad and stomping and shooting and choking on anger that only comes from one source, of course, the one that is evil.
With no Scripture for reference, how can they know about only two forces on earth and only one place to find peace at the end of the time we’re allotted?
Do we share the Good News that they don’t need the drugs or the booze and that joy can rest safely in each heart and bloom in the midst of whatever?
Or do we stay on the porch where we rest and recharge with sweet songs to inspire but then get up and close the windows and doors?
It might take more faith to follow that train flying through someone’s dark nights and offer umbrellas to cover their heads in a storm.
But in these end times when lives are crumbling and blowing away or falling in sewage-tainted rivers of death, what else is more important to do?
_____
John 14:27
“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
John 20:21
Again he said, peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.
