The Board of Directors met only once yearly because that was what the law required of the corporation. In last year's meeting, the people were bored with having to meet, so the assembly aptly illustrated the very essence of boredom. The highlight of the conference was the coffee and cake they served. I felt its accomplishments were zero, but what had I contributed? Shamefully, nothing.
When the new year arrived, my desire for novel plans and resolutions came with it. These included letting go of what was no longer necessary. At the forefront of my mind was whether I needed to retain my position as a board member in the little organization. The next meeting would be sometime in January, and I had to decide if I would continue my status on the board.
Boring meetings aside, maybe there was something I could do to ignite a spark of enthusiasm that would enliven at least some of them. That meant I would have to step out with authority and make the initial move. First, my attitude needed some adjustment. What if I ditched the concept of being bored and brought new excitement and expectation to the next meeting? So I decided to give it a try. Was I audacious enough to be the catalyst to bring about change? No contest; I knew I had to be!
I prayed for confidence and boldness, and the Lord reminded me that He had called me to be a leader. I had usually tried to deny it, but that time was over. This situation was a step that God wanted me to take.
The day of the scheduled board meeting arrived, and I was ready. I got there early and projected an air of confidence and enthusiasm. Soon, the officers and the other two board members arrived, and the meeting was called to order. I felt the old spirit of complacency and boredom trying to take hold, but I countered it with a smile and suggested we begin an outreach in the community. I cited each person's unique gifts and callings and told them that the Lord wanted to use them to uplift and encourage others.
To my amazement (well, not really!), they responded with delight and resolved to minister wherever needed. They began looking for opportunities and planning how their plans would proceed. I saw life and happiness in their eyes as they realized their lives had value and purpose.
The biggest lesson here was for me. I could go on being bored in board meetings where nothing was getting done, or I could bring the fire that would ignite the others to get up and go forward using their God-given gifts and abilities. May my learning be an encouragement to all of you, too. We must never be bored with anything but always seek new growth levels in Christ.
