Alone. Some of you know what it’s like to be alone, to be shunned, to be treated as if you weren’t there, like you have some disease they’re afraid they might catch. Perhaps you have some temporary ailment such as this COVID I hear isolates so many. Perhaps something more permanent.
I know what it’s like to be alone in a crowd. You’ve read my story many times, though my name never appears. But I’m sure Jesus knows it. But I’m getting ahead of myself. You've heard me called the woman with the issue of blood.
The women among you are no doubt horrified at the thought of twelve years of bleeding. As disgusting as it sounds, it was heart breaking to experience.
Twelve years of not being allowed at Temple. Twelve years of being considered unclean so people would flee from my possible touch. Twelve years of being alone in a crowd.
I remember the day my husband left me, taking our precious children.
“Jacob! What are you doing! You can’t do to me. I’ve done nothing wrong. This is not a judgment from God.”
He looks at me with cold, hard eyes any love for me gone. “Then why haven’t the doctors been able to heal you? You just get worse every time you go. I don’t know what you’ve to deserve this, but I’m not living another day with an unclean woman. And neither will my children.”
He slowly emphasized the word “MY children” Not our children.
I ask him, “So what are you going to tell the children as they ask you where I am?”
He spits out the words, “I’ll tell them you’re dead. After all you’re dead to me.”
And he left me.
Our house seemed so empty. I felt so alone. No hugs, no laughter, no one to look into my eyes, no love.
Every now and then I would see Jacob and his new wife in the marketplace. And if he happened to look in my direction, he would look right through me as if I wasn’t even there. Because to him, I wasn’t.
Once I cried out him desperately, “Jacob, can you at least me how the children are?”
And he said nothing and just walked away. After all you don’t talk to a ghost.
I continued to try doctor after doctor. They were so happy to take my money and oh so sad when they couldn’t heal me. And finally, my money and my hope were gone.
I would walk around my little house trying to relive my memories to somehow feel less alone. But instead,I felt lonelier than ever.
And then came the words that some of you may know. But then Jesus...
But then Jesus came to the marketplace. Jesus was here! Desperate I push my way through the crowd. If I could but touch the hem of his garment, I knew I would be healed. As I push my way through the crowd, people who know me pull away, not wanting to made unclean. I don’t care. That just made it easier for me to get to Jesus. And then I stretch out my hand and I reach...and I reach..there! I touched it! And instantly the bleeding stopped! I was healed! Joy flooded me, which turned to guilty fear when Jesus says “Who touched me?”
How did he know? What would happen next? I, an unclean woman, had touched a rabbi! Would he take back my healing? Trembling I fell at his feet and confessed that it was me, and told him my story. And with such love he looks into my eyes and tells me, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” Mark 5:34 NIV.
Such peace, such healing, such freedom. Such a savior.
You too may be alone in a crowd, in a prison of loneliness. But then, Jesus can change everything. Whether in a crowd, or an empty house, reach out to Jesus. you’re never alone...Jesus is there with such peace, such healing and such freedom.
Such a savior.
