Had been a huge success.
My family enjoyed it all,
Then left me with the mess.
We'd talked and laughed and had great fun
Around the dinner table.
Then all of them just up and left
As soon as they were able.
This was a thankless clean-up job
That didn’t hold appeal,
And each had somewhere else to be
With reasons, they said, real.
Although they’d pulled this trick before,
I bought it every time.
With scads of dishes to be washed,
The kitchen was all mine.
It’s strange how noisy it had been
Till I was left alone.
Except for echoes that remained.
Now I was on my own.
With arms in sudsy dishpan near,
I said a little prayer.
I asked the Lord if He would keep
Each one within His care.
Then while I scrubbed the plates and cups,
Along with pots and pans,
I thought how lovely it would be,
To have a few more hands.
I wasn’t sad to be alone,
And I was not afraid,
But still, I’d not have minded
If one or two had stayed.
