There was nothing vague
About what was ahead
Now that Egypt’s firstborn were all dead.
The Israelites had escaped from slavery,
Which presented Pharaoh with a very
Big challenge
To avenge.
Following Israel’s Passover,
He was desperate to recover
Each and every slave,
So he could save
His status as divine
And make them resign
Themselves to his absolute control
Or be added to his death toll
The Egyptians had been laid waste
As Israel made haste
From the land of Goshen,
For they weren’t joshin’
About making a quick start
As they set out to depart
But now, with Pharaoh’s chariots hot on their heels,
Those slaves might have longed for their own sets of wheels,
So they might leave Egypt for good
As quickly as they could.
Time was tight
As they came in sight
Of the coast.
But there was no time to boast,
For the expanse of the Red Sea
Seemed to stretch for eternity
They crowded at the shore,
Frightened and footsore.
Wondering what to do
Or who to sue
For getting them into this mess
At the edge of a wilderness.
Poor Moses and Aaron
Were starin’
At certain defeat
With no option of retreat,
For Pharaoh’s advance
Did not enhance
Any chance
Of deliverance.
Then in what must have sounded like a joke
To Moses the Lord spoke,
Without a smirk or a laugh:
“Stretch your staff
Out across the water,
And you’ll be sure ta
See the waves divide
From here to the other side,
To create a path that’s wide
Enough for everyone to fit
As you all git
To the other side,
While I swallow Pharaoh’s pride!”
Moses did as he was told
And back the sea rolled
To make dry land
Of the seabed’s sand.
The Israelites then sped
Across that Sea Red
Far below the waves
To celebrate how God saves
Pharaoh’s army pursued,
But their chariot wheels got glued
As the sand became mud
And the water became a flood
With a mighty crashing sound
that got his whole army drowned.
And from the other shore,
Israel clearly saw
That their chains were now busted,
That Moses could be trusted,
And that if the Lord they would beseech,
He would stretch any beach
Way beyond their reach...
