Ah, so serene here at the beach. No problems, no cares...I drift off into a peaceful slumber only to be interrupted my sister’s annoyed voice.
“Jennifer*! WHAT are you doing? Why do you have a lawn chair in the middle of the living room, with a fan blowing on you and a Gilligan’s Island rerun playing on tv?”
“Well, I was trying for Fantasy Island or a Hawaii documentary but Hulu is clearly misnamed.” I straighten my floppy beach hat which is obscuring my vision.
“That wasn’t my point. WHY are you doing this?”
“You know how stressful work has been and there’s nothing like a day at the beach to make me relax.”
“Well, you got half of that right, this is nothing like a day at the beach. We’re INSIDE. Not to mention the fact we live in Arizona. There are no beaches.”
“Exactly, excuse me, sis, I have some rays to catch.” I aim the desk lamp toward myself.
“Wouldn’t you catch more rays outside?”
“Haven’t you heard today’s UV ratings? I think it’s somewhere between great for baking chocolate chip cookies on the sidewalk and only go outside between the hours of twelve and three if your house is on fire.
My sister sighs.
“Jennifer, I leave you to your “beach.” Have fun. But I know that you know that our substitutes are never as good as God’s plans for us.” And she leaves me.
It’s so maddening when my sister is right. Again. As I put away my desert oasis and make plans for a walk in the park early tomorrow morning, this poem comes to mind:
Bowing to God’s gentle correction
Enjoying the wonders of His creation
Actively seeking His direction
Clearing my mind of my own imperfection
Hearing His still small voice
This is my choice.
Pushing poor substitutes aside
In His blessing, I choose to abide
And I see God’s kind of BEACH
Is always within reach.
*Not my name. This is mostly a work of fiction with some grains of reality
