I've always loved stars. I have them everywhere, on my shirt, my phone cover, anywhere I can. I love reaching for the stars for God's glory. And as an actress, I'll admit I would love to have a starring role in a production.
And then I think about a woman who, along with her husband Abraham, had a starring role in God's promise to humanity. I wonder what it would have been like to be Sara, as she neared the time of her final curtain.
(PUTS ON HEADDRESS. AND SAYS IN A DREAMY, REMINESCENT VOICE) I will make your descendants as many as the stars. That was such a wonderful promise that You made to my husband so long ago. Like the stars in the dark desert night, it brought such light to us.
Such a beautiful promise. A pretty bold promise to make to an elderly childless couple A promise that only you, God, could make come true...But it seemed as far away as the stars. We tried to reach those stars with Ishmael and we all know how that turned out.
But God, your faithfulness reaches to the stars. You faithfully rescued me from royal harems, TWICE! And when I laughed at the promise ever coming true, you gave me laughter, in the form of my son, Isaac, his name meaning laughter.
Speaking of Isaac, I wonder when he and his father will return. Something didn't seem quite right when they left. Something was missing...but I can't quite put my finger on it. LOOKS OFF TO THE RIGHT.
My two favorite men, home at last! How was the trip?
My mother's intuition is tingling. "Is there something that you two aren't telling me?" Abraham and Isaac glance back at each other, bursting with joy and news, but for some reason, not wanting to tell me.
"God is so good, Sarah," Abraham joyfully tells me.
"Incredibly good," Isaac chimes in, "God provided the lamb."
THE LAMB! That was the missing piece that had been niggling at my mind. Abraham and Isaac were supposedly going to make a sacrifice, but hadn't taken a lamb!
"Better sit down, Sara," Abraham tells me, "We have a story of God's provision.”
As Abraham tells the story of God telling him to sacrifice Isaac, I want to jump in, say something, do something, hit something, maybe hit someone. But I need to hear the rest of the story. For my own eyes tell me it ended well. My Isaac was standing there, alive, bubbling with joy.
After they finish their story, Abraham and Isaac can tell I need some time to soak this in. So they each kiss me on the cheek and walk away.
HOW COULD ABRAHAM NOT TELL ME WHAT YOU HAD TOLD HIM TO DO! I'm Abraham's wife, didn't he trust me? I'm Isaac's mother, didn't I get a say? And then I realize, Abraham wasn't showing his distrust of me, he was showing his love for me.
What if he had told me? I would have spent those days waiting for Abraham's return, wondering if he would be coming home alone.
Thank you, Lord, for my husband. Thank you, Lord, for my son. Thank you, Lord, for the lamb. I do believe that Abraham's descendants will someday outnumber the stars. Just like Your faithfulness reaches beyond the stars.
WOMAN REMOVES THE HEADDRESS
A starring role in God's promise. Sara and Abraham never achieved that, Sara and Abraham never desired that. For the starring role in God's promise is always Jesus, the Lamb.
