We children run and race and chase each other all around and squeal with pure joy to be young and free of care. The men work to put picnic tables together into one long table, where the women begin to find places for the offerings they have worked hard to prepare, a smorgasbord of delight.
We play till we are called together for dinner. Daddy is the preacher, and with a loud voice, he pronounces the blessing. I wish he would hurry, but when he’s finally finished, we grab a paper plate and begin. I choose a crispy chicken leg and a soft biscuit from a large assortment of breads and meats and try to hurry past the salads and vegetables till Mama catches my eye and shakes her head. I add a couple slices of garden-fresh tomatoes and her potato salad, then a tiny serving of green beans. I pick up a lemonade from a side table of drinks and go to sit under a big tree with the others. We all make quick work of what we’ve gathered on our plates and rush back for another plate and the siren call of the dessert table. I wander past all kinds of delicious cakes and pies and head straight for a huge chocolate cake with many layers. I wish for more, but Mama had told me ahead, “Just one dessert.” I do sneak a couple of chocolate chip cookies and hide them behind the cake.
The sound of happy talk and laughter of men, women, and children circles in the air above us.
We throw our empty plates away, and too full to run around, we sprawl in the shade to tell funny stories and sing silly songs till the women clear the table, and it’s time to leave. We all sing together "Amazing Grace" before we leave.
The long-awaited day is finally over, and sweaty and tired, we head to our families’ cars. Mama
tells me she doesn’t know how one little girl could get so dirty. As we head home, I think,
“Surely this must be what heaven will be like.”

Both your beginning and ending were well done. I enjoyed how you brought us through the entire picnic. It was well crafted. Thank you.
Thank you, my 'relative'. I, surely, relate with your good narrative of our younger memories and even now, with our grand children. Well-done.
