With hopes I’ll entertain her,
I send her on her crooked way.
My soul cannot sustain her.
When Envy comes to visit me
And makes a plan to stay,
I tell her, “You’re not welcome here,
You’ll have to go away.”
When Anger lights within my mind
And makes herself a nest
To spout out bitter words, I shout,
“Get out, unwanted guest!”
When Pride lifts up her ugly head
To squash humility,
Then she skedaddles when she sees
The Spirit lives in me.
When Selfishness would have her say,
Insisting I not share,
I bid her, “Scram and stay away.
A Christian’s meant to care.”
Ungratefulness slips to my side
And whispers I should gripe
For everything that bothers me.
I mutter, “Take a hike.”
These ugly girls who visit me
Bring feelings, most distressing,
But when I send them on their way,
There comes a healing blessing.
