many years ago
not fully understanding
the pilgrimage
was far more than a
path to Heaven
and the trail would not
always be the image
of perfection
often having to scrimmage
with unforeseen forces
to clear the way
to
move
forward
Indeed
My innocent
ignorant
pre-saved self
believed
by accepting Jesus’ invitation
to walk with Him
I would now be hiking
upon a smooth level lane
of harmonious everyday sameness
interjected by rapturous moments
oh
how
wrong
I was
Indeed
I soon realized this hike
was rough
it’s course
full of potholes of pride
hidden awakenings
and reflections of reality
Jesus wanted me to see
to guide me
surprise me
and shock me
as when
I stumbled
and fell
facing
a particular pond
I had tried hard to avoid
and I saw
my mirrored self
as a mess
an ugly mess
that
needed
to
change
Indeed
As I’ve hiked deeper and farther
many times
I’ve had to gather
my garbs of self delusion
and scrub them
take my rags of rebellion
and burn them
take my hats of hesitation
and toss them
and I still
must chastise
my
complaining
spirit
as I imagine
I will
many more times
until my journey ends
but I trek forth
with my Bible in my backpack
and Jesus
directing
my
way
Indeed
For I have vowed
to keep hiking
this twisting trail
toward Heaven
for life
over mountains
through valleys
around every unforeseen bend
that Jesus wills
because I have found
after my roughest crossings
He always leads me to
a peaceful clearing
where I may rest
be comforted
and strengthened
on an awaiting bench
that’s seats two
by a table
always
set
with two cups
ready and waiting
for me to sip
with Him
His sustaining refreshment
His elixir of love
so indescribably wonderful
it’s taste
refutes any reason
to abandon
my walk
so
Indeed
I hike on
