How will they punctuate it?
To tell the story of what was,
What mark could indicate It?
Would it contain a period
To show that I had finished
The work that had been mine to do
With service undiminished?
I hope there’s not a question mark
To symbolize a thing
I’d not completed as I should,
Which might reproaches bring.
How sad to find a comma there
To say there was disruption
Of future things I’d dreamed to do
Before the interruption.
I’d love to see in boldest print
A point of exclamation
To prove I’d served my Savior well,
Beyond all expectation.
The best of all that there might be,
A colon at life’s end,
Announcing heaven’s joyous life,
That I was to begin.
Whatever punctuation’s used
To show my life is done,
I trust my loved ones realize
A better life’s begun.
