“I can’t.”
Something was very wrong. That evening we became aware of her high pain tolerance. The silent scream from her appendix produced an inability to bend over. I sensed the need for a doctor and her appendix was removed with minutes to spare before bursting.
All pain points to a deeper problem, but not all inner anguish is acknowledged.
A spouse dies and to cover up the pain and loneliness, the widow/widower remarries. Sometimes the new union lasts for several years and other times only months before the inner pain rises to the surface and problems emerge. They are now faced with a twofold anguish; the grief they stuffed and guilt over this failure.
Unacknowledged pain can lead to deep depression, even though the response you receive when asking how they are doing is, “I’m fine.” Their silent scream may manifest itself in drinking, overworking, out of control eating or many other incapacitating choices. Only someone with a finally tuned ear will hear that cry.
As a Christian, we know Someone who bends down to listen to our silent scream.
“Because He bends down to listen,….” Psalm 116:2 (NLT)
