And you are a specialist
An authority
One who can teach others, lead the way,
Or so say the experts
It’s been two hundred and eighty-three thousand hours
Give or take a few thousand
Since I first took on the mantle of authority
And I’m not sure I am much further ahead
Than I was thirty-two years and a handful of months ago!
I reflect on the mistakes made
The harsh words said
The slammed doors
The floods of tears (generally mine)
And wonder how I could ever be considered proficient
Somewhere along the way,
During the two hundred and eighty-three thousand hours
(But who’s counting?)
There was a glimmer that, perhaps, against the odds
I knew what I was doing
On those days, the shiny ones,
when everything is practically perfect in every way
I am reminded
Once again that:
Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from Him (Psalm 127:4).
I don’t always have the answers
I don’t always carry out my role as parent correctly
But the Lord never wavers
And I am blessed
Because I have been a parent for two hundred and eighty-three thousand hours
And counting…
