Another day of having my new employees question my authority, another evening of battling my children questioning my authority as a parent.
Finally I fell asleep watching infomercials and dreamt of the most amazing product. In my dream a colorfully dressed pitchman addressed the screen with the following enticing pitch:
I have a product
You’ll never resist
For it solves a problem
That always seems to persist
A lack of authority
You’re leading employees
They know you are new
“Why did I sign up?
The recruiter’s pitch I rue”
“Listen to me!”
but they ignore your plea
For you have no authority
Or your children defy you every day
“It’s time for bed”
“No, it’s time for play!”
They don’t listen to your plea,
You have no authority
So here is the drink
That will solve your woes
It will give you a tingle
From your head to your toes
The drink: Authora Tea
It may be bitter
But it’s a small price to pay
For the insurrections you will slay
Drink up
Have a second cup
For you’ll have
Authora Tea
How much does it cost?
That thought crossed
Your mind
If you have to ask
You can’t afford it
But how can you lead
Without Authora tea
Or perhaps a beverage
Is not your style
We have a shirt that
Will make you smile
A short-sleeved shirt
emblazoned Authora
Yes! It’s an Authora Tee
Or perhaps you’re a golfer
This one is a dandy
Stick it in your golf bag
Its size is so handy
Emblazoned on this tiny stick
Is the word that will do the trick
Yes, it’s another Authora tee
In my dream I started to reach for my credit card and my cell phone but then on the screen a white-robed figure walked on and said to the pitchman
“These are just gimmicks
little tricks
Authority doesn’t come from a drink, shirt, or tea
True authority listens and sets people free
False authority makes the people cry
For justice now
Not by and by
Authority should make people free
And despots flee
For authority never belongs to a fraud
It only comes from God.”
The pitchman then shrugged and held out his hands as if for handcuffs and said:
“Well, if you think that I’m a fraud
That true authority only comes from God
Better call the authorities.”
I wake up and repeat to myself
Authority never belongs to a fraud, it only comes from God. All right,God, I need to get back to sleep. I can’t wait for tomorrow to come. With Your authority supporting me, it’s going to be a great day.
