The clerk's voice,
a switchblade,
slices through the anxiety
and anticipation
coursing through my veins;
a freight train of Adam’s making.
Filled with regret, guilt and shame
I stand on shaking legs.
My body a mass of
invisible holes oozing dread.
Each accusation
that flew through the air
from the witnesses
for the prosecution
became a fiery dart
that ripped and tore away
my defence.
Every ounce of hope I clung to
swirled away on the winds of
hate.
My Advocate whispers,
“You’re safe with Me.”
But I just don’t see how He
can save me from this mess
I’ve made of my life.
I know there was truth
woven in each calculated lie;
A small view of reality
in every thing testified.
I’m doomed.
The judge stares
from his elevated place,
a look of contempt on his face.
He sneers in delight
confirming my fright.
“You are guilty and are hereby
sentenced to DEATH!”
I collapse.
The prosecution erupts
celebrating the win.
Then my Advocate
raises a nail scarred hand.
“I appeal to the
Highest Court!”
The circuit judge has
no choice,
he must comply
to the laws set before
time began.
“But what can You do?”
I moan from my place.
He smiles and says,
“Just wait.”
His hope is His own.
I have none.
But then He reaches out
and takes my hand
in His.
“These scars will testify
on your behalf.
They speak of
My Father’s great love.
Your past mistakes rightly
demand blood,
but the price
has been paid.”
Something shifts in my mind.
Can this be possible…
is freedom mine?
Hope like a fragile
spring flower
pushes through the
sludge of despair
I wrapped my future in.
“But who is the judge
I now must face?”
My voice quivering
with a clinging trace
of doubt.
“My Father
is the High King.
With Me by your side
we win.”
