Big changes were beginning in Galilee
For Jesus, a carpenter-teacher,
Was becoming quite a preacher
Who many began to follow...
They could no longer swallow
The Roman occupation.
For they wanted their own nation,
So Jews
Might choose
Their own destiny.
But there wasn’t any
Way the Romans would stand aside
And let the Jews decide
To run their own affairs
As had their forebears.
And so, in every town and city
This preacher took pity
On those in need
When no-one else would heed
Their desperate plight.
He set them aright:
The lame found they could walk,
The dumb started to talk,
The deaf began to hear,
And lepers suddenly became clear.
Yet with all these folks healed and free,
It was sad to see
Serious animosity
Stirring among the nobility
Who rated themselves winners,
Way ahead of the publicans and sinners,
Who, in becoming Jesus’ friends,
Challenged the upper-classes’ pretense…
But while the nobles grew furious,
Many others became curious.
Not just the drinkers,
But a wide range of thinkers
Began to discuss
Who was causing this fuss.
So, it was early one night,
Avoiding anyone’s sight,
That one thinker came to Jesus’ house,
Hoping to espouse
How quickly
Jesus could restore the sickly.
But while he wondered about some secret fix
Jesus abruptly raised astonishing obstetrics.
Which was so far beyond the thinker’s grasping,
That he began asking,
“What on earth
Is this new birth?
To start all over again
Is too much for my brain!
I’d be too cramped for room
Back in the womb.
And my mother – who could hide her
With me again inside her???”
He remained quizzical,
Locked into the physical.
Sensing the strain in his brain,
Jesus went on to explain
That this new start
Came right from God’s heart:
“I want everyone to hear it,
For it’s a gift from the Spirit!”
He convinced this curious thinker,
Who embraced this truth - hook, line, and sinker.
And in John chapter three,
You’ll find this thinker’s identity.
Was he an Athenian, or a Roman,
An Egyptian, a Babylonian,
Or a Spartan, or a Trojan?
No, he was an Irish theologian!!!
For strange it may seem as,
His name was Nick O’Demus!
