You don’t begin in orchestra
Or even in a band.
You practice solo in your house
Until you understand

Just how to play an instrument.
You practice every day,
Although all those who live with you
Might wish you’d go away.

You don’t begin a work of art
Without a bit of training,
Though the amount of mess you make
May give rise to complaining.

You keep on trying day by day
And never hesitate
To fashion something beautiful
As you work to create.

So what would make you think you might,
If using common sense,
Write right away best-selling works
With no experience?

You write with regularity,
While all the while you’re sighing.
You read, research, and pound the keys,
And never stop your trying.

If you’ve no time for practicing,
You won’t accomplish much.
You needn’t plan on great awards
Or honors, fame, and such.

Yet no one ever did achieve
At any kind of winning,
No matter how they wanted to,
Unless they made beginning.
