(ADDRESSES THE AUDIENCE)
Hello there. I hear some of you think of me as generous because I lavished my most valued possession on Jesus’ feet. Others of you might be secretly agreeing with Judas. “What a waste,” you think. “The ointment could have been sold and the money given to the poor.”
I am so thankful Jesus didn't agree with Judas and scold me for being wasteful like Martha sometimes does. “Oh Mary, you waste so much time sitting at the feet of Jesus. You should be doing something.”
But the words of the Lord did cut me to the heart; not because He scolded me, Jesus would never scold me. More than anyone else, He knows my heart. For my heart longs to give everything to Jesus: my ointment, my time, Indeed my very life.
The words of Jesus that cut me to the heart was when Jesus said, “She is anointing me for my burial. I will not be with you always.” BURIAL! Lord, I suspected that would be true, but it's a stab to the heart to hear those words. Please don’t leave us. Stay with us, Lord.
Generous. (SCOFFING LITTLE LAUGH) there is only one person I truly know is generous, and that is Jesus. He gave up his heavenly place. And as much as I hate to admit it, He will be giving up His life for us. Anything I can do to bring Him joy is my joy
Travel back with me to that special night, the last night I would sit at the feet of the Messiah.
(STEPS TO THE SIDE OF THE STAGE)
I want to give You everything, Jesus! But what could I give You? I wish I could sit at Your feet forever. Those poor, poor, poor feet dirty, cracked, calloused… Your feet are as calloused as Your heart is tender.
Your feet…that’s it! I run to get my inheritance, the precious ointment that my mother left me. I hear it's worth a year's wages, but that's meaningless to me, for I yearn for an eternity of sitting at Your feet, loving You not as a husband but as my Lord.
I know that some would call my gift generous, perhaps even extravagant. I laugh at the idea of being thought generous. I owe You everything, not the least, that You raised our brother Lazarus from the dead. (SLOWLY AND EMPHATICALLY REPEATS THE THREE WORDS) From...the…DEAD.
You gave Lazarus the gift of more years on earth with us and gave us the incredible gift of having our brother restored to us. If I could lay the world at Your feet, I would. My paltry gift is nothing even though it is my earthly everything. I humbly lay it at Your feet.
How can I respond with anything but generosity in response to Your loving gifts to us? I give you my hands. I give you my heart. I give you my life. Use me, Lord.
May the sweet smell of my offering follow You wherever You go, whatever frightening road lies ahead. I fear, Lord, for what sacrifice You are being called to make. You are so generous to me. I give because You gave.
