“One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.”
Psalm 27:4 ESV
But King David couldn't dwell in the temple of the Lord although he always did constantly dwell in God's presence. He had duties and responsibilities as king and leader of our people. But I have no such restrictions or responsibilities.
Some of you may be thinking oh this poor, poor woman, married for only seven years before her husband died, and now a widow at 84 and she has to dwell in the temple day and night. No! I am blessed to be able to do what King David could only dream of, dwell in the House of the Lord all the days of my life, to spend time worshipping, fasting and praying for the redemption of Israel.
But I do grow weary--not of life in the temple I would never grow weary of that--but of life on this earth. I long to see Jehovah face to face and to shed this earthly frail form. But oh, Jehovah if I could only see your Messiah come to earth before I go. Simeon who also has been waiting and praying for the Messiah told me an amazing secret. The Holy Spirit has revealed to him that he would not see death before seeing the Messiah.
Oh Jehovah, Simeon and I are so close in age…could it be…could it possibly be that I too may see the Messiah before I see death. Oh Jehovah, just that thought makes me want to live here another 84 years in your temple, praying and waiting if that meant I would see your Messiah come to earth.
Oh, look at that sweet young couple entering the temple with their precious little baby boy. There’s something different about them, a radiance. They’re talking with Simeon. I’m sure Simeon wouldn’t mind if I eavesdropped a bit.
Oh, praise you Jehovah. I cannot believe the words coming from Simeon’s mouth, and the tears of joy streaming down his face. He is holding that little baby and just said “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation.” (Luke 2:29-39 ESV),
I think I may cry with joy myself. Oh Jehovah, you have taken my breath away with your incredible gift. You have enabled both Simeon and me to see the Messiah come to earth! But don’t take me home just yet. I have far too many people who have been waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem. I must tell them all!
So, fellow worshippers, you may call me faithful but I am but a frail reflection of the glorious One who has been, is now and will ever be faithful to us again and again.
